Safe Harbor Volunteer Opportunities:

Children's Advocate
Shifts: Monday - Thursday 6 PM - 8 PM & as needed
Objectives: To provide recreational activities, support, fun, and tutoring to resident children of all ages while their mothers attend group, work, or other appointments.
Qualifications: Love, patience, and time to interact with children (will be trained for a basic understanding of how domestic violence affects children.) Shadowing current advocates required.

Clerical Support Advocate
Shifts: Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Objectives: To assist the shelter staff in the completion of necessary office duties such as filing, copying, and writing thank you notes.
Volunteer Qualifications: Good organizational skills, typing and/or computer skills.

Crisis Line Advocate
Shifts: Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 9 PM
Objectives: To provide assistance to shelter staff in answering calls and directing them appropriately; providing crisis intervention and referrals; documenting information calls and completion of telephone intake assessment forms.
Qualifications: Ability to handle crisis situations well. Must be able to show compassion and make appropriate referrals in a nonjudgmental manner. Shadowing current advocates or staff required.

Emergency Room Advocate
Shifts: weeknights and weekends
Objectives: This is a highly responsible "on call" volunteer who will go to the emergency room when a patient has been injured due to domestic violence. The volunteer will provide support, information, and give referrals to the victim.
Qualifications: This valuable service requires a volunteer who has a sound knowledge of domestic violence and community referral resources. Must be able to respond to calls quickly, have reliable transportation, and enjoy direct contact with victims in a compassionate nonjudgmental way. Extra training will be required to gain the knowledge of domestic violence.

Re-Sale Store / Facility Support Advocate
Shifts: varied, by appointment
Objectives: 1) Sorting donations of food and/or clothing or 2) Transportation of donations from the community to the shelter or store and also to client's homes or 3) General shelter maintenance such as yard work and minor home repairs.
Qualifications: Volunteer should enjoy organizing things and like to do small projects with immediate results. This is real "hands on" type of work.

Safe Harbor Ambassador
Shifts: when requested by organization
Objectives: To provide knowledge of domestic violence and Safe Harbor services by speaking to groups of people and/or by forming a contact group for distribution of information and brochures. The major goals are to educate people about the problem of domestic violence, to solicit financial and volunteer support for the shelter, and to contact community resources that would connect with victims of domestic violence.
Qualifications: This volunteer should have a sound knowledge about domestic violence and Safe Harbor. This position calls for a sincere and persuasive speaker who enjoys presenting to groups or contacting community resources. By invitation only to seasoned Safe Harbor volunteers.
