Our Board of Directors and staff are excited to announce interim leadership. Kristie Cohens and Samantha Tucker will serve as Safe Harbor's Interim Co-Executive Directors as we continue to fulfill our mission and vision and prepare to search for long-term executive leadership.
Our Community Counseling and Advocacy Team meets clients where they are each day, listening to their experiences, honoring their strengths and supporting them as they make difficult choices and find personal power to take courageous steps. We’re deeply grateful for the passion, energy and heart that our Community Counselors and Advocates bring to their work, playing an integral role carrying out our vision to influence a culture where all people can feel safe and valued in their relationships.
Becky Callaham, Safe Harbor’s Executive Director, will end her 22-year tenure at the organization on May 31, 2022. She has served as the Executive Director since 2008. Safe Harbor’s Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are deeply grateful for Becky’s 22 years of service and wish her the best in her next chapter.
After much contemplation and with a myriad of feelings, I have decided to step down from the position of Executive Director for Safe Harbor. It has been the greatest privilege to have had the opportunity to walk alongside victims and survivors of domestic violence for the past 22 years, and to serve as Executive Director for 13 years.
The administrative team at Safe Harbor is comprised of Human Resources, Finance, and Administration. They are the backbone of our organization and if you will, the oil that keeps the machine running. While the Safe Harbor you know as our readers and supporters, focuses on serving clients and reducing domestic violence, our administrative team makes sure we can do all of that by working hard behind the scenes!
If you did not know April is Arab American Heritage, also known as MENA Heritage month. For the record MENA is an acronym that means Middle East and North Africa. This incredibly beautiful and diverse region of the world has often been villainized as a dangerous place. We have all heard the stereotypes of the people from this region as, scary, uncivilized, barbaric, and terrorists. Ignorant ideas aside, the larger issue is that we hear very little, if any, positives about the region or its people. There is so much beauty, the music, the colors, the spices, the food, the architecture, the hospitality, and so much more.

The Help Line is operated 24/7/365 by a diverse, caring group of staff members, interns, and volunteers trained in crisis intervention, empathetic listening, and trauma-informed principles.
“I didn’t know that I was being abused because my definition of abuse looked different. My husband pushed me, but most of my suffering was verbal and psychological. I left my husband to protect our young daughter. Almost immediately I felt the weight of his oppression begin to lift. I could see a difference in my daughter as well. Then he broke into my home and assaulted me in-front of her.
I sought help and was led to Safe Harbor. My daughter and I are in counseling now. I am sorting out the mess that abuse has caused. I am finding my voice and seeking opportunities to grow and better my life as well as my daughter's. She will gauge her self-worth from my own self-worth. I must show her that she deserves the best, by expecting the best for myself.
Many years I suffered in silence. By telling my story and being honest with friends and family, I am taking control of my life again.”
