The beginning of a new year is a perfect time to reflect on both the beautiful and difficult days that we are leaving behind. At Safe Harbor, we want to look back on the past year and share some of our favorite memories of 2021.

Just as there is no “I” in “teamwork”, there would be no 24/7 services at Safe Harbor without our incredible Community Living Team, who keep our shelters operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Safe Harbor’s Community Living team work days, nights and weekends to meet needs and maintain the safety and well-being of our shelter residents and children in our three shelters.
I am the Faculty Director of Furman University’s Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and a Professor of Spanish. I teach service learning classes for Furman students, primarily our Spanish majors and we work with organizations such as Safe Harbor, Neighborhood Focus and Greenville County School ESL students.
Soy la Directora de la Facultad del Instituto de Innovación y Emprendimiento de la Universidad Furman y profesora de español. Doy clases de aprendizaje de servicio para estudiantes de Furman, principalmente nuestros estudiantes de español y trabajamos con organizaciones como Safe Harbor, Neighborhood Focus y estudiantes de ESL de Greenville County Schools.
I am Safe Harbor’s Bilingual Outreach Coordinator. I raise awareness about domestic violence in the Upstate. I am also a part-time journalist with Nuestro Estado, a Spanish-language news platform.

“I didn’t know that I was being abused because my definition of abuse looked different. My husband pushed me, but most of my suffering was verbal and psychological. I left my husband to protect our young daughter. Almost immediately I felt the weight of his oppression begin to lift. I could see a difference in my daughter as well. Then he broke into my home and assaulted me in-front of her.
I sought help and was led to Safe Harbor. My daughter and I are in counseling now. I am sorting out the mess that abuse has caused. I am finding my voice and seeking opportunities to grow and better my life as well as my daughter's. She will gauge her self-worth from my own self-worth. I must show her that she deserves the best, by expecting the best for myself.
Many years I suffered in silence. By telling my story and being honest with friends and family, I am taking control of my life again.”
