A mom like Gabrielle will do anything to protect her children. Despite living with abuse for years as she desperately tried to keep her family together, Gabrielle knew it was time to call for help when she saw how the abuse was affecting her children. Gabrielle is a resilient mother of four boys who entered our shelter after her abuser of six years became violent in front of the children. “My children [said], ‘mama I’m so scared’...at that point, as a mother, I said this is not okay. I don't want my children to see that this is okay to endure. Now that my children have seen this, it's time for me to go.” Although she was scared, she knew that leaving was the best thing she could do for her sons, so she began searching for a place to go. “I came across Safe Harbor, and I just called. And the lady, she was so sweet and so kind. She was like, well, we can actually move you in tonight. We literally left with nothing. All I grabbed were my kids' birth certificates and I walked out and I didn't go back.” When Gabrielle arrived at Safe Harbor, she was excited, scared, and starting completely from scratch. She says, “I held my head high, and I left the situation that was no longer serving any type of purpose for me or my children.” |
As we approach Mother's Day, a day meant to celebrate the unconditional love and strength of mothers everywhere, we are reminded of the countless moms in our community who are bravely fighting to protect themselves and their children from the reality of domestic abuse.
At Safe Harbor, we stand in solidarity with survivors of domestic abuse, offering them the support, resources, and safe haven they need to rebuild their lives. But we cannot do this crucial work alone – we need your help.
This Mother's Day, your donation can offer a lifeline to a mother seeking refuge from abuse for her family, providing access to safe housing, legal advocacy, therapy, and other essential services.
Every dollar you contribute will make a difference in the lives of mothers and children who are courageously breaking free from the cycle of abuse. Your support will not only help them find safety and healing but also empower them to build a future filled with hope and possibility.
“Oh my gosh, my life has changed drastically. As of May 3rd, I will graduate with my Associate’s in Business Management. Safe Harbor has provided me with the tools that I need to ensure for me to be able to go to school. Once I exit this program, I can stand on my own two feet. I don't have to depend on anybody. I know that I can take care of me and my children.”
Thanks to your support, mothers like Gabrielle can lift themselves out of the cycle of abuse. Your donation can make a real difference in the lives of families like Gabrielle and her boys.
This Mother's Day, let's come together as a community to uplift and empower mothers who have survived domestic abuse. Together, we can create a future where every mother and child can feel safe and valued in their relationships.
Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of survivors.
